BABY

Posted by Hello
I watched BABY (the musical) last night at the Meralco Theater. I don’t know if it was because I was not feeling well (and dizzy from all the medicine I took) or my expectations were so high for the play, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did the other musicals of Lea Salonga. There were times during the second half of the show that I yawned every three minutes and wished it will soon end so that I can go home already.

The production and special effects for one were not that grand and colorful (compared to The Little Mermaid nor Midsummer Nights Dream) so my interest was slightly dampened already. But I guess the script (as in the case of They’re Playing Our Song) did not require so much as an elaborate stage design and production. So fine, fair enough. No point comparing this show with Miss Saigon either because I think they are of a different category. Let’s just focus on the music then.

But still, the music was just ok. Some songs touched me (especially the Fatherhood Blues), others almost put me to sleep. The actors are very talented no doubt but their songs just don’t tickle my fancy I guess. Well, I am a big RENT fan. Thus, I have high standards.

The story should have appealed to me. It was how three different partners (a young couple still in college, an athletic duo and an old husband and wife whose youngest child just left home for college) cope, accept and perceive the new change in their lives- the coming of a baby. I was able to relate better to the athletic couple Pam and Nick (played by Jet Pangan and Agot Isidro) who very much wanted a baby but have difficulties conceiving one. Not that I have the same predicament, but I was just touched at how strong their love seems for each other, no matter what tests and bumpy roads their marriage encounters. Other than that, the plot was common among drama shows in the local channels.

So, what it worth watching the play? My friends seemed to enjoy it. Maybe my sickness just really clouded my senses, thus was not able to fully appreciate it. Nevertheless, good thing I only paid 515 bucks to see it.
